Cheerleaders are neither cheering nor leading

Posted by sriram on April 24, 2008

That’s the latest on IPL. Politicians are objecting cheerleaders of IPL because of the obscenity.
Who decides obscenity anyway. Is it the double-tongued politician who doesn’t know what they stand for and what their allegiance is. Well, I don’t think so. You do not get to decide anything unless you run the government properly. Even if you run the government properly, this aint China.

Doesn’t these guys have bigger and better things to worry about. I dont know, how about this list to start with:

  1. Impending general election
  2. How to pull the government down
  3. Rising food prices
  4. Inflation
  5. Global warming (this is not a hoax, this is real)

Now, in the defence of cheerleaders, its the sweltering heat of Indian summer which prompted them to wear clothes like that. They are really cheering for their teams. Whenever a batsman hits a four or a six or a wicket falls they jump and jive and burn more calories than the players. If you cannot appreciate their efforts then maybe you can switch off the television or change the channel to “Kyon Ki Saas bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi”. If people who are coming to grounds are complaining (which I highly doubt) then please, dont go. But, please don’t spoil the fun for others. Besides, Mallya had spent some serious money on them. Now you are going to ban them. I don’t think so.

If it is politicians I can understand they dont know what would be their winning point, so they jump on everything. Funny thing is, Shahid Afridi is of the same view. He thinks cheerleaders are a distraction for the batsman. Really? Why do you want to concentrate on the girls in pom-poms when your team needs you and you have a task in your hand and most importantly someone is paying $675,000 for you to play.

Get over it and start playing Shahid. Deccan Chargers need you.

Update : Maharastra government suggested animated characters instead of cheerleaders. I find that obscene and vulgar.

Kings XI Punjab vs Mumbai Indians

Posted by sriram on April 24, 2008

Both the teams lost their first two mathes and looking to register a win in IPL. Mumbai Indians gone down fighting in two close encounters, Punjab is undone by lackluster performance in their match against Rajastan Royals. It would be a brand new match and they have their spirits high.

What would be interesting is if Sachin Tendulkar plays. Rumor is it that Sachin is ready to play his first 20-20 game. He celebrated his birthday yesterday and turned 35.

If Sachin plays the game, Mumbai Indians might win it.

This encounter promises to be entertaining on a friday night.

Rajastan Royals win a thriller

Posted by sriram on April 24, 2008

17 runs needed from 6 balls. Shane Warne with a look on his face saying “impossible is nothing” batted with poise. After  a single by Pankaj Singh, Warne is back on strike and Royals needed 14 runs from 4 balls. He sent the third ball for four and followed it up with 2 sixers. The bowler was Andrew Symonds.

Game.Set and Match. Royals win and the team carries off Shane Warne.

DLF Sixers : Andrew Symonds (7 sixers)

Man of the match : Yousuf Pathan

Andrew Symonds : “I bowled the worst over in 20-20 history”. Honest.

Indian women’s hockey team fails to qualify for olympics

Posted by sriram on April 24, 2008

What does that gonna do with a blog that is dedicated to IPL cricket. There is a relevance. The reason why hockey team did not qualify for olympics is because they did not have a good coach. Where is their coach. Their coach is busy buying, promoting, dancing, partying with his new obsession Kolkata Knight Riders. Yes, you guessed it I am talking about Shah Rukh Khan.

Take it easy Shah Rukh. Chak De Knight Riders.

Shahid Afridi brings Chargers back into the game

Posted by sriram on April 24, 2008

In what have been a quick turn of events, Shahid Afridi picks up two wickets in 3 balls. First it was Mohammad Kaif and then it was Greame Smith. They coulnt ask for more. But looked like the couldn’t take more. 4th ball of the over was hit high and deep by Jadeja and Doddapaneni Kalyan was under it for a long time. He couldn’t hold on to the catch. This is really disappointing. Chargers really need to take their catches.

Shane Warne walks to the crease and Afridi fires one down and Shane doesnt make contact. Afridi walks down and has as animated chat with Shane Warne. This really charged up Shane Warne and the whoile atmosphere.

We got a match on our hands.

Yousuf Pathan hits the fastest half-century of IPL

Posted by sriram on April 24, 2008

Hyderabad has witnessed some bold hitting of cricket ball today. No, it did not come from another aussie nor a kiwi. It is tall, lanky lad from Baroda, Yousuf Pathan most famously known as Irfan Pathan.

He did it in 20 balls with 6 sixers and 2 fours. This innings brings Deccan Chargers back to square one.

It was the kolkata pitch for the first match, Virendra Sehwag the second match, could it be Yousuf Pathan for the third match.

Deccan Chargers keep finding obstacles and the first ever victory eludes them.

Another aussie comes to party

Posted by sriram on April 24, 2008

It is time for Andrew Symonds to justify his $1.35 million price tag. He did it with ease. With 117 runs from 53 balls which includes 11 fours and 7 sixers has helped Deccan Chargers to post a total of 214. Incidentally it is also the fastest hundred of IPL.

There was an incident in the match where a ball hit by Symonds in the bowling of Munaf Patel is mis-fielded by Yousuf Pathan. This is a common occurence. What is not common is the bowler complaining about it and having a word with the fielder. Why is that not common because the bowler is Munaf Patel. Munaf you cannot crib or complain about anyone’s fielding unless you know what it means to field.

This looks like a good target but with Greame Smith joining Rajastan Royals also the dew factor coming in it should be a tough match.

Tennis starlet Sania Mirza graces the occasion.

Chris Gayle to miss IPL first-edition

Posted by sriram on April 24, 2008

Sad, but true. The first centurion of the international 20-20 is set to miss IPL first edition because of groin injury. Chris Gayle is part of Kolkata Knight Riders team. It would be interesting to see who would they replace with. He was bid for $800,000. It would also be interesting to see if they will replace him as they are doing good without him. What would they do with that money? One more music video maybe.

Why is there no icon player for Deccan Chargers?

Posted by sriram on April 24, 2008

The answer is two-fold:
One version of the story is Deccan Chronicle owner of Deccan Chargers requested BCCI to grant icon status but they have declined.

Other version is, VVS Laxman has denied icon status as that would give the company more budget to work with. Remember icon player would recieve 15% more than the highest bid player. In this case its Andrew Symonds for $1.35 million. That would translate to $1.5525 million making VVS Laxman the richest player in IPL.

I would like to believe the second version of Laxman declining the icon status and getting the right team in place with the right bids. What he has to do now is deliver. He has do that right and fast. The time is now.
