Lone English player joins IPL

Posted by sriram on April 30, 2008

That is Dimitri Mascarenhas. He is the lone english player who was allowed to play in IPL. Mascarenhas has attracted a bid of $100,000 from Rajastan Royals.  He is a batting all-rounder and his explosive batting skills are a welcome addition to the IPL which has lost some of the powerful hitters this week. Othe english players have expressed that they would like to play for IPL, Kevin Pietersen was very vocal in his desire. None of them were allowed to play because of the central contract. Mascarenhaswas the only english player and will be available for 5 games. It would be interesting to see how Shane Warne uses Masceranus and will he play against Knight Riders tomorrow.

It will be a tough for Shane Warne tomorrow, because he has to choose 4 from a pool of 7 players, including himself. Assuming Warne, Graeme Smith and Kamran Akmal as the obvious choice he has to fill the last spot from 4 players. I think he will choose Mascarenhas ahead of Sohail Tanvir, Morne Morkel and Younis Khan.

Mascarenhas will be leaving to England on May 12.

Oh No! Not another aussie

Posted by sriram on April 26, 2008

Not that anything wrong with it, but its getting funnier for the IPL. Standing for Indian Premier League its the australian players who are rooling the roost. The performances atleast. Its Shane Watson who took Rajastan Royals home with 61 runs and 2 wickets and was declared man of the match. Can someone from the Indian team please stand up and deliver. Its high time that has happened. Funny part is australian players whoever are performing are payed lower than their indian counterparts only to be skewed by Andrew Symonds $1.35 million. Thought not paid much other australian players like Mathew Hayden, Shane Watson, Hussey brothers seem to be more professional. Whatever the format is and wherever they play they seem to give their best. Also it seems like all the teams are revolving around the australian players. The australian players who performed so far are :

  1. Mike Hussey
  2. David Hussey
  3. Shane Warne
  4. Shane Watson
  5. Mathew Hayden
  6. Glenn McGrath
  7. Brett Lee

It would be interesting to see who will come to the rescue when the australian players (barring few) would leave for their country.

Rajastan Royals win their encounter comfortably with Royal Challengers.

Man of the match : Shane Watson

Royal Challengers reeling at 121/7

Posted by sriram on April 26, 2008

With all the controversy about Harbhajan Singh slapping incident, I almost forgot that there is a match happening. Royal Challengers are reeling at 121 and looks like they can reach 160. This might not be a good score for the Bangalore pitch. Remember Brendon McCullum‘s Innings?

I should really commend Rajastan Royals. They are the cheapest team ($67 million) by value in the tournament. They have the weakest team or the underdogs when this tournament started. They took a drubbing from Daredevils which supported the earlier view. Then came the twist. The magic of Shane Warne. This time its not only his leg spin magic but his captaincy and coaching. This has been a phenomenal comeback by the aussie and his team. He also backs it up with his performance be it taking wickets or scoring runs.

If there is one captain who backs his team and leads the team with his performance in this IPL, it is Shane Warne. MS Dhoni, Yuvraj Singh, Saurav Ganguly, VVS Laxman (least effective), Rahul Dravid all failed to impress. Virendra Sehwag has come up with a brilliant performance the other night and it is too soon to judge him yet, but he takes the match away from you in minutes.

Did I miss anyone? Oh Yeah, Harbhajan Singh. I really dont want to talk about it here. That guy slaps if he looses. Good that they have suspended him but, Deccan Chargers team almost thought of arranging security for their next match with Mumbai Indians tomorrow.

Anil Kumble is back in the Royal Challengers side. Can he create a magic? Challengers really need it.

Rajastan Royals win a thriller

Posted by sriram on April 24, 2008

17 runs needed from 6 balls. Shane Warne with a look on his face saying “impossible is nothing” batted with poise. After  a single by Pankaj Singh, Warne is back on strike and Royals needed 14 runs from 4 balls. He sent the third ball for four and followed it up with 2 sixers. The bowler was Andrew Symonds.

Game.Set and Match. Royals win and the team carries off Shane Warne.

DLF Sixers : Andrew Symonds (7 sixers)

Man of the match : Yousuf Pathan

Andrew Symonds : “I bowled the worst over in 20-20 history”. Honest.

Yousuf Pathan hits the fastest half-century of IPL

Posted by sriram on April 24, 2008

Hyderabad has witnessed some bold hitting of cricket ball today. No, it did not come from another aussie nor a kiwi. It is tall, lanky lad from Baroda, Yousuf Pathan most famously known as Irfan Pathan.

He did it in 20 balls with 6 sixers and 2 fours. This innings brings Deccan Chargers back to square one.

It was the kolkata pitch for the first match, Virendra Sehwag the second match, could it be Yousuf Pathan for the third match.

Deccan Chargers keep finding obstacles and the first ever victory eludes them.

Rajastan Royals win in style

Posted by sriram on April 21, 2008

Shane Watson sent the ball packing to  boundary and Punjab team to Uppal, Hyderabad. Commendable batting display from Watson and the young Ravindra Jadeja. Punjab was short of 20 runs atleast. They dont have to go too far to look at what went wrong. Answer would be found in Yuvraj Singh and his obsession with the sweep pull shot. For the lack of a better term for that particular shot. Its the shot that you play on your knee but you pull the ball which is a little wide of off-stump. Sure, it fetches you a lot of runs but its not the only shot you can play Yuvi. He has actually missed a lot off balls trying to play that particlar shot and eventually  got out for that shot

Yuvraj Singh obsession with this sweep shot can be compared with Robin Uthappa‘s obsession with the scoop shot. Both could not win the games for their team.

Shane Watson rocks. Aussies rock. Jadeja is a pleasure to watch.

Rajastan Royals chase is on

Posted by sriram on April 21, 2008

I have almost written this team off the competition. Boy, was I wrong. Royals came back strongly from the humiliating defeat from Daredevils. This is a good sign for the competition. This actually opens the competition wide open. My predictions went wrong earlier and I am not predicting anymore.

If you know of a good astrologer ask him to predict the winners of any IPL match. If he is right ask him to write your kundli.

Rajastan Royals need 55 from 44 balls

Posted by sriram on April 21, 2008

It is anybody’s game now. This is really gripping. Another aussie to the rescue of this Indian League. Its the turn of Shane Watson.

Royals have to do something stupid from here to lose.
