10 Things IPL sponsors want to happen in a match

Posted by sriram on April 21, 2008

  1. A wicket
  2. 3rd Umpire decision pending on a run-out/line decisions.
  3. A batsman or a fielder injured
  4. Last ball of the over.
  5. A player having an argument with the umpire.
  6. Broken stump.
  7. A Black out. I haven’t seen this until yesterday.
  8. Fireworks creating a debris on the ground and groundstaff called up to clean.
  9. Ball needs to be replaced (This is rare in 20-20 format but still sponsors would love it).
  10. Ball lost.
  11. Broken bat. (that’s actually 11 but this just happened in the Rajastan Royals match)

Why? So that they can play their advertisements one more time and bore the audience. The also know that you wont be flipping the channel because you dont want to miss a ball (especially if Yuvraj Singh is batting). Their motto is you can miss a ball but you cannot miss an ad.

Now, what they don’t want is a wicket to fall on the last ball of the over.

Top 10 reasons why IPL will work

Posted by sriram on April 17, 2008

  1. It involves Cricket. Its a religion.
  2. It involves Bollywood.
  3. It involves money. A lot of it.
  4. It involves Reliance Industries (their touch is golden).
  5. It involves savvy entrepreneurs/ business houses who never miss a business opportunity. (GMR, Deccan, India Cements, DLF)
  6. It takes only 3 hours of people’s time.
  7. It is bound to get a result unlike test cricket. (Bowl out is gripping).
  8. It involves australians and pakistanis. Both are known for bringing their own flavor to the game.
  9. It involves cheerleaders. Indians are starved. Its a new phenomenon and they will like it.
  10. It involves SRK. In India SRK and Sex sell. IPL has both (kind of).

A recent survey shows that following 3 C’s are the most covered on Indian television:

  1. Crime
  2. Cinema
  3. Cricket

IPL has the later two. What more can we ask for.

Top 10 money makers of IPL

Posted by sriram on April 17, 2008

Not including BCCI in this list is deliberate. Because, I really do not know how much do they really make.

Ranking Player Name Team Amount Description
1 MS Dhoni Chennai $1,500,000 Highest paid player in the team
2 Andrew Symonds Hyderabad $1,350,000 Highest paid player in the team
3 Sachin Tendulkar Mumbai $1,121,250 Icon Player for Mumbai
4 Sourav Ganguly Kolkata $1,092,500 Icon Player for Kolkata
5 Yuvraj Singh Mohali $1,063,750 Icon Player for Mohali
6 Rahul Dravid Bangalore $1,035,000 Icon Player for Bangalore
7 Sanath Jayasuriya Mumbai $975,000 Highest paid player in the team
8 Ishant Sharma Kolkata $950,000 Highest paid player in the team
9 Irfan Pathan Mohali $925,000 Highest paid player in the team
10 Jacques Kallis Bangalore $900,000 Highest paid player in the team

Icon player receives 15% more than the highest bid player in the team. Which means :

  1. Sachin should thank Sanath
  2. Sourav should thank Ishant Sharma
  3. Yuvraj should thank Irfan Pathan
  4. Rahul should thank Jacques Kallis.

The two teams which did not feature in this top 10 list are Jaipur and Delhi.

Top bid for Delhi is Gautam Gambhir  for $725,000. Which means Virendra Sehwag gets  $797, 000.Top bid for Jaipur is Mohammad Kaif for $675, 000. There is no Icon player for Jaipur.

SRk, Mallya, Preity Zinta did not feature in this list because they are bleeding money right now and yet to make money. Mallya starts his minting machine tomorrow.
